Ejigayehu Shibabaw (Gigi) - Enoralehu አኖራለሁ (Amharic)
The angelic voice of one of my favorite Ethiopian singer-songwriter Ejigayehu Shibabaw (Gigi) her "Gold & Wax" album, in 1996, produced by Bill Laswell. Enoralehu is the last track on the LP, with only one song, Utopia, in English. If you are unfamiliar with Ethiopia, it's on the eastern horn of the continent and is the second-most densely landlocked country in the world. You may also have heard Bob Marley sing of Haile Selassie, who was overthrown in 1974. It is one of Africa's most beautiful counties and sports some of its highest mountains, with their rushing waterfall and volcanic springs. But about the music.... just listen to a taste. I dare you to sit still as her layers of rhythm and magnetic melodies beckon.
